Cocktail parties

As she sat on the floor she could see everything. She didn't mind that the terrazzo was cold. Not at all. Peering around a sharp corner from the hallway, no one saw her but she saw them. They were talking, laughing and having a good time. The men were in suits and the ladies were in wiggle dresses and elegant organza full skirt dresses.

She sat quietly in the dark hallway. When she got tired, she'd lay down and could look out. The guests looked comfortable in the sunken living room which made it so much better for her to see. The recessed lights were on and shining down. It was all very clear.

She wanted to be a grown up and have parties like these. An old soul she was. She didn't like being little. She wanted to be at that party.

Those were the cocktail parties I recall. The invited guests at my parents house socialized, ate and had a good time. There were hors d'oeuvres and cocktails served in rock glasses and martini glasses. I still remember the cocktail cart that was brass and glass. It was a festive evening where people could visit, share stories and get to know each other. They always dressed to the nines.

It would be fun to host a cocktail party. When was the last cocktail party you hosted or attended? I wish I could say I'd been to one recently but that's not the case. It's been quite a while for me. Besides running one business since 1990 and being a mother to two daughters, the business closed and we have since relocated.

I've had guests over in the past but a themed cocktail party, from the Mad Men era, would be a hoot! The guests would all be dressed from the sixties! The only thing missing would be the little girl in the hallway because now she's at the party.
