3 Cooks Make A Family

Friday, November 27, 2015

Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks for all your blessings. The first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth Colony, present-day Massachusetts, in 1621.

In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November, would be Thanksgiving day. Who would've known that the declaration, made by our 16th president, would have lead to delicious meals with friends and family as we give thanks?

This year for Thanksgiving the girls and I enjoyed a lovely meal and the side dish was gratitude. I thought I would share with you what we had!

A spiral sliced ham...

It was hard trying to decide what the main course was going to be but the girls and I decided on ham.

On the side of the fabulous glazed ham we had stuffing or dressing.

We also made sweet potatoes with marshmallows, yum!

This was so good. It's a favorite of ours.  The way the marshmallows and sweet potatoes are mixed, it melts in your mouth. I like mine with pecans.

Trust me you will love this recipe:

Ingredients

1 can of Sweet Potatos/Yams or 6 fresh yams, cubed
A few tablespoons of brown sugar
One bag of marshmallows (large)

Directions

1. Drain the sweet potatos after opening the can about 3/4 of the way

2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

3. Pour Sweet Potatos into baking dish

4. Pour marshmallows on top of sweet potatos

5. Place in oven at 350 F, checking until marshmallows are slightly brown and sweet potatos are warmed.

Then we had old fashioned pumpkin pie!

Did you know, that the earliest pumpkin pie wasn't the pumpkin pie we know and love today? Evidently, people would cook pumpkin flesh in a shell with milk and spices. It wasn't a pie consistency, it was more like a pudding.

It wasn't until 1651 when a French cook wrote a cookbook and featured a recipe that where pumpkin pulp was boiled with milk, strained and then mixed with sugar, butter, and salt. The cook baked the mixture in a pastry shell and voilà! A Thanksgiving tradition for many was born.

We hope you, your friends, and family all had a wonderful day full of love.

Biggest Hugs,

Tracey
